Makinde mourns Buhari

Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State, on Sunday expressed his condolences to the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu, on the death of his predecessor in office, former President Muhammadu Buhari.

Makinde  equally commiserated with the wife of the former president, Hajia Aisha Buhari and his entire family, praying to God to grant repose to his soul.

The governor, in a statement made available to newsmen on Sunday, described Buhari's death as unexpected, noting, however, that the former president made his mark in serving the country.

He prayed that God gives his family the fortitude to bear the loss, while also granting the former Military Head of State Aljanah Firdaus.

Pensioners protest in Ibadan over poor pay

By Eniola Philip  Retirees, under the aegis of Nigerian Union of Pensioners, FBN branch, Ibadan, on Wednesday staged a peaceful protest in Ibadan, decrying poor pays  from their former employer, First Bank Nigeria Limited. They staged the protest at the front of the Southwest Regional Office of First Bank, Dugbe, Ibadan, the Oyo State capital. The retirees, elderly men and women, who   alleged that their pensions had not been increased in the last 20 years,  stood united in a protest born of desperation and decades of what they felt was injustice.  Their spokespersons,  Prince Debo Olaoya, Olusola Adekoya, and Sanjo Akanmu, said despite their faithful service to the bank, their monthly pensions are demeaning and degrading. Olubadan joins ancestors two days after 90th birthday

The Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, has joined his ancestors for two days marking his 90 th  birthday.   Owolabi Olakulehin, passed away in the early hours of Monday, July 7, 2025, exactly one year after he ascended the throne. Mr. Toye Arulogun, one of the members of the Olubadan Media Team confirmed the development to The Guardian in Ibadan.   ''I can confirm it. We will soon issue an official statement on it'', Arulogun, who was a former Commissioner for Information in Oyo State, said.    Born on July 5, 1935, Oba Olakulehin’s death,  was officially presented with the staff of office by Oyo State Governor, Engr. Seyi Makinde, on July 12, 2024, becoming the 43rd Olubadan of Ibadanland. Oba Olakulehin ascended the throne following the demise of Oba (Dr.) Moshood Lekan Balogun, Alli Okunmade II, who died at the age of 81 years on March 14, 2024.

UI Celebrates its researchers who won awards, grants

The  Vice Chancellor of the University of Ibadan, Professor Kayode Adebowale,has lauded research teams from different departments of the university who won the TETFUND Institutional Based Research Awards and a China-Nigeria Joint Laboratory Project for Soil and Water Conservation; and Agricultural Sustainable Development Grant on behalf of the university. Adebowale  made the commendation at an award presentation ceremony held in honour of the researchers.
